Barnard started his career at Spurs, featuring for the London side three times in the Premier League after a number of loan spells at various Football League sides.

In 2008 he signed for Southend United where he netted 37 times in 75 league appearances, earning him a move to Southampton in the summer of 2010. Again, Barnard excelled and grabbed another 23 league goals from 62 games. After a number of other loan spells, he returned to Southend in January 2014, but was unable to recover his previous form.

For the 2015-16 campaign, Barnard signed for Crawley Town but only managed 1 league goal from 19 games. He then dropped out of the Football League with Braintree and was part of the squad which was relegated from the National League, scoring three league goals over the course of the season.
