Chris Smith has been recalled by Ipswich amid an injury crisis a the Suffolk club.
The defender has made 22 appearances since arriving on loan from the Tractor Boys on the 21st September last year and has become a key part of the Clarets promotion push. Smith had formed a defensive partnership with Michael Spillane that has seen Rod Stringer’s side concede just 23 league goals so far this season. Smith featured in every game City have played since his debut against Poole on the 23rd September.
Whilst his initial loan spell was up at the turn of the year, Chelmsford had agreed a deal with Ipswich to extend that for a further month, but the 19 year old has now been recalled three weeks earlier than anticipated.
This leaves Rod Stringer with a hole to fill in defence. Mark Haines, who featured in Tuesday’s Essex Senior Cup win over Colchester United is the obvious choice, but City will now be thinner on the ground in defence than they had hoped for at this stage.
Smith quickly became a fan favourite during his time at Chelmsford and looks to have a bright career ahead of him. I wish him the best of luck back at Ipswich.
