10-man Clarets hold on for crucial win

Despite Kudus Oyenuga’s 19th minute red card, Chelmsford City continued their unbeaten run with a crucial 1-0 win over promotion favourites Dartford at Melbourne Stadium.

The Clarets took the lead in the 15th minute when Mike West tucked home his second goal in as many games, latching onto a Lee Barnard pass following a defensive error from the Dartford back line.

Just 4 minutes later though and jubilation turned to dismay. Kudus Oyenuga was adjudged to have elbowed the Dart’s Tom Bonner and referee Ian Fissenden wasting no time in showing the Clarets front man the red card.

As you would expect, the sending off changed the game, with the visitors gaining confidence and going in search of an equaliser.

A mixture of some good fortune and heroic defending though, allowed Rod Stringer’s side to hold on for the win, with Michael Spillane clearing off the goal line in the dying moments.

The win sees City climb to second in the National South table, though now just behind Braintree on goal difference after The Iron were held to a 1-1 draw at Bath.
