Clarets secure 3rd spot with comfortable win

Chelmsford City secured third place this afternoon, avoiding an additional play-off game in the process, thanks to a strong second half performance on the south coast.

With the scores level at half time, but with Hampton & Richmond losing against Truro, the Clarets were up to third, but pushed on in the second period, scoring three times to make it 3-0.

Scott Fenwick opened the scoring on 52 minutes and was handed the chance to double his tally on 68 minutes when City were awarded a spot kick. The striker stepped up, but his shot was saved, only for him to tuck home from the rebound and make it 2-0.

Anthony Church added a third goal 10 minutes later to make it 3-0.

Hampton could only manage a draw against Truro meaning that Rod Stringer’s side climbed above them into 4th.

Hampton and Truro will now play each other again in the first play-off game, with the other preliminary tie taking place between Braintree and Hemel Hempstead.

The winner of the latter will face Dartford, who missed out on the title by way of goal difference, whilst City await the victors from the former.

Chelmsford’s play-off semi final will take place at home on Sunday 6th May with a 3pm kick off. The final will take place the following Sunday, 13th May.
