Promotion dreams halted once more

Chelmsford City’s dreams of promotion the National League are once again on hold for at least another season, as the Clarets were beaten 1-0 by Hampton & Richmond Borough at the semi-final stage.

Rod Stringer’s side dominated much of the early exchanges, hitting the bar on two or three occasions, but were unable to find the breakthrough and it was goalless at the break.

The second half was a more even affair until the game turned on a crucial moment at 54 minutes in. Goalkeeper Jake Jessup, who was given the nod ahead of Sam Beasant between the sticks, came to claim a cross and misjudged it, leaving the goal exposed. With an open goal looming for the visitors, Jazzi Barnum-Bobb, who had been having one of his best games in a City shirt, chose to use his arm to prevent the ball going in.

The full-back was given his marching orders and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Max Kretzschmar converted from 12-yards to give Hampton & Richmond the lead.

They then proceeded to shut up shop against the 10 men of City and were able to see out the game and progress to the final, where they will face Braintree who caused an upset at Dartford this afternoon too, winning 1-0.

The result sees Chelmsford fail to go up through the play-offs for the 6th time since arriving at Conference South level back in 2008, with last seasons’ loss at Ebbsfleet being the only time that we’ve progressed beyond the semi-final stage.

Once again it looks like a summer of re-building and uncertainty ahead, with the Betsi takeover still dragging on and much of the squad likely to move on again.

For whatever reason, City seemed destined to remain in the National South but, to use on of my most hated football cliches, “we go again”…
