Chelmsford City have re-signed striker Phil Roberts from Braintree Town.
The former Arsenal man enjoyed a brief and largely unsuccessful spell with the Clarets last season, appearing just twice in the FA Cup and twice in the Essex Senior Cup and failing to find the net. He joined Chesham United on loan shortly afterwards and had left the club by the end of the season.
Apparently a changed man, Roberts has enjoyed an impressive season with Braintree so far this campaign, having netted 17 goals so far in the league, making him the division’s joint second top scorer.
Braintree have been enduring a number of problems off the pitch with unconfirmed reports of wages having not been paid and Chelmsford have seemingly taken the opportunity to bring Roberts back to Melbourne Park with a view to solving the current goalscoring issues from the club’s existing forwards.
With a number of strikers already on the books, it remains to be seen if all with stay at the club, as Roberts joins Lee Barnard, Chris Dickson, Shaun Batt, Tom Hitchcock and Kudus Oyenuga who are all fighting out for a place in the starting lineup.
