McAuley started his career at Cambridge United, which included a month-long loan spell at the Clarets during the 2013-14 season. He left the U’s in January 2014, signing for Dartford before joined Chelmsford on a permanent basic in the summer of 2015 as the club’s “12th Man” signing.

The decision to splash out on the centre back proved to be a good one as McAuley claimed Fan’s Player of the Season for the 2015-16 campaign, before being the first player to sign a new deal under Rod Stringer ahead of the 2016-17 season.

Despite signing a new deal with the club ahead of the 2016-17 campaign though, McAuley soon decided to move on, joining Lowestoft Town to reduce he travel time.
